application tips
Eyeshadow DiagramThe general purpose of eyeshadow is to shape and shade the eye, not color it. The color aspect of makeup ideally comes from lipstick and blush. For trendier looks, there are plenty of lines that sell "blues, greens, and orange." Paula's philosophy is to create classic, elegant looks that empower women, not make them look like made-up "dolls."

Always apply powder eyeshadows with brushes. There are dozens of eyeshadow brushes to choose from, depending on what look you want to create and what type of brush feels best and is easiest for you to control. Paula's Choice Eyeshadow brushes are quite versatile, but by no means are they the only options! As a guideline, the size of the eyeshadow brush should match the size of the area you are working on.

Sweep the brush over the powder, and knock off the excess. Depending on the shade, apply to the appropriate area using smooth, even strokes with the flat side of the brush. Try to keep the strokes moving in one direction, not back and forth in a wiping motion. If more depth or intensity is needed, simply layer the color until it looks the way you want.

If you opt to use the same eyeshadow for wet and dry application, reserve a specific quadrant of the eyeshadow for wet use only. Once most powders are used wet, they will not apply as well dry. Setting aside a small section allows the best of both worlds!

Remember this basic fact when choosing colors: Light shades bring things forward, darker shades recede. Therefore, it stands to reason that the appropriate light color will serve to highlight an area whereas a darker color will serve to shape and shadow an area.

By varying the intensity of one eyeshadow, you can create a variety of looks and save time. For example, Paula's Choice Smoky Taupe can be used as a soft contour color, then used wet as an eyeliner, and used again more dramatically for back corner shading.

The eye design you choose should be based on personal preference, your skill level with makeup and most importantly, TIME. Trying to do an elaborate eye design when time is short risks making careless mistakes and may result in an overall sloppy-looking application.

The basic concept is to shade the eye to accent its shape or alter the appearance of its shape by using a progression of light to dark colors across the eye, blending one over (or into) the other so that you can't see where one stops and the other starts.

Always blend hard edges of eyeshadow. This can be done with our Shadow Softening Brush, the sponge you used to apply your foundation or, in a pinch, a cotton swab. Do not use your fingers, as this will only serve to undo a careful application and potentially smudge the eyeshadow instead of blending.

To accent the color of your eyes, do not use a color that matches your eyes! This will only serve to compete with your eye color. Instead, choose a neutral shade that is opposite your eye color. For example, blue eyes look stunning in soft brown or caramel tones; green eyes sparkle with rust and orange-brown shades. Brown eyes can wear almost any color!

Most common sense packaging
One of my pet peeves with eyeshadow collections is that there is never enough of the base color. I usually run out quickly am then am stuck with dark colors that go to waste. This trio is a brilliant idea - I like that it is in one container with a BIG section of base color. The pigmentation is nice, the formula doesn't flake like MAC eyeshadows and the colors are excellent. I have the Next To Naked collection but plan on buying a few others.

Eyes love this product
The absolute best eyeshadow I've tried! No need for a cream base to prevent creasing. Blends extremely well, easy to work with and looks beautiful!
